Man Utd transfers: Adidas to help Manchester United in £200 million bid for Barcelona forward Lionel Messi

Manchester United could be given help from their new sponsors Adidas to sign Lionel Messi from Barcelona, according to The Metro.

United have joined Chelsea in the race to sign Messi, who has opened the door to a possible transfer with some cryptic comments recently.

Adidas sponsor Messi and will be United's shirt supplier next season, and they want to bring the two together.

And they could supposedly give United extra money to help them pay Messi's £200m release clause, while other cash might be given to pay wages.

See if Lionel Messi features in our list of the top January transfer targets?

The Metro also reports that United are to step up their interest in Barcelona defender Gerard Pique after failing to sign Fiorentina's Stefan Savic.

The Red Devils - as well as Tottenham - were linked with a move for 24-year-old Savic over the summer, and were set to renew their interest before the January window closes.

However, the Montenegro international has shot down any chance of a return to the Premier League by signing a new four-and-a-half-year deal at Fiorentina.

Now Louis van Gaal is preparing a £15m bid to bring Pique back to Old Trafford. The pair previously worked together at the Nou Camp during Van Gaal's two stints in charge of the La Liga giants from 1997-2000 and 2002-2003.

Adidas desperate for Manchester United to sign Lionel Messi

Adidas are ready to help Manchester United complete a world-record deal for Barcelona star Lionel Messi, reports the Daily Star.

The German sportswear giant is set to replace Nike as Manchester United's kit manufacturer next season in what will be the first of a ten-year deal worth £750 million. They want to ring in the partnership with a statement of intent; that appears to be signing Messi from Barcelona.

Messi is the crown jewel in Adidas' huge portfolio of sponsored sport stars. However, they have had to see him playing in a Nike kit at Barcelona and want that to change. They know a deal to bring him to Old Trafford will take a world-record offer but are ready to help in any way they can.

"I don't know where I'll be next year although I've always said I want to end my career at Barcelona."

Financing the deal

Agreeing to pay Manchester United £75 million-a-season to produce their kit has helped significantly. The Red Devils are expected to break the £500 million barrier in turnover should they return to the Champions League next season.

That would see them as one of only several clubs who could finance a deal and remain the right side of Uefa's financial fair play restrictions. Bayern Munich and Real Madrid appear to be the only other clubs capable of matching them.

Who is showing intent?

Chelsea have also been linked with a move in recent weeks. However, they are now thought to be unable to meet the demands of both Barcelona and Leo Messi. As it is, Jose Mourinho is struggling to keep his team in the black, selling off David Luiz and allowing Frank Lampard to leave this summer for what are assumed to be financial reasons.

They are all sponsored by Adidas, but Manchester United are the only club showing real intent to sign the 27-year-old. They were reportedly put on red alert after Messi threw his future into the air at the recent Ballon d'Or ceremony.

Unsure future

"I'm not sure what's going to happen, whether I'd go to Newell's," he said.

"I don't know where I'll be next year although I've always said I want to end my career at Barcelona."

It was just the latest suggestion that Messi wants out of the Nou Camp in what has been an ongoing saga between him and club officials. It would take £200 million to sign him from Barcelona as well as a wage packet worth almost £300 million over six-years.
